Could be a few things, one thing to check is if the steels have worn groves into the clutch basket.
Have you changed to an aftermarket clutch lever, might not have the same amount of pull.
is the cable adjusted properly.
is the lever on the shaft going into the clutch in the correct position.
Has it just happened or has it got worse over time?

A couple of easy checks,

1,  have you had a crash and now your clutch lever won't go out all the way because it hits the bark buster?

2, check if you have clutch clearance? Can you pull the outer of the cable out from the top mounting position? You should be able to move the outer of the cable about 4mm or there Abouts

If both these items are ok then you will have an internal problem possibly like Tim said the clutch plates or the sides of the clutch hub is worn and the plates are locking on it.
Have you drowned it in water the last ride or anything? Water can boil in the plates and desolve the linings.

Let me know and I'll advise you more or feel free to give me a call

But 1+2 are the most comin problems and the easiest to fix aswell.
Cheers Dave

Assuming there is no recent crash damage -

Not disengaging properly could be too much end play in the cable, suggest no more than 4mm as per Dave's No 2.

If all is well in the system the clutch should be disengaged with the lever pulled back thru 60% of it's travel.

You should be able to pull the lever all the way back to the handlebar, have you lubed the cable lately to ensure full travel?

Have you changed to a thicker engine oil - maybe done at a recent service without your knowledge?
It's just more time to be flat out!

Just re read the post after reading yours ken I thought it wasn't engauging once released but it's the opposite ( it's been a long weekend)  you can actually remove all the clutch clearance to give it a bit more throw when you pull the lever. Note you cannot leave it like it but it can prove a point and help with diagnosis.

When you check the clutch cable Clarence let us know how much it has

Hi guys
Thanks for the advice on the clutch problems.
i have bitten the bullet and the bike is now down at the bike shop to have a new clutch put in it, as i haven't got time between now and easter to do it myself
Even they said the clutch was dragging what ever that means.
hope to  see you on the trails soon !
Regards
